Word frequency

No words match the current frequency filters.

Percentages use every word in the text as the denominator. The optional common-word filter is an English-language list.

Counts update automatically. Character counts use user-perceived Unicode characters, so joined emoji count as one character.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a word?

A word is a sequence of letters or numbers. Apostrophes inside words are included.

How are characters counted?

Characters are counted as Unicode grapheme clusters. A joined family emoji or a letter with a combining accent counts as one user-perceived character.

How are reading and speaking times estimated?

Each estimate divides the word count by the selected words-per-minute speed. These are planning estimates, not guarantees.

How does word frequency work?

Words are compared case-insensitively after Unicode normalization. The table can filter by word length and optionally exclude a documented set of common English words. Percentages always use the full word count.

Why is there no readability grade?

Common readability formulas make language-specific assumptions about syllables and sentence structure. This tool shows direct counts and averages instead of presenting an unreliable universal grade.

Which target types are available?

You can track words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, or UTF-8 bytes. Quick target buttons remain editable.

What does UTF-8 bytes mean?

It is the storage size of the text when encoded as UTF-8. Non-ASCII characters can use more than one byte.
